Are The Elderly at Risk of the Zika Virus?

Zika Virus Santa ClaritaConfirmed cases of the Zika virus have made waves across several U.S. states since the start of 2016, Until recently, the Zika Virus was considered a relatively obscure disease that only affected certain countries to the South.  Now doctors and scientists are warning Americans that there is the potential for a major outbreak in the United States in the coming years. As with most diseases, high-risk groups include people with compromised or weakened immune systems, like those who are already ill, pregnant women, infants, small children and the elderly in Santa Clarita.

What is Zika?

Zika is an uncomfortable, but relatively safe illness for most of those who contract it. Symptoms include fever, skin rashes and conjunctivitis. Having no cure or vaccine for the disease, the standard treatment is for the symptoms themselves, such as taking over-the-counter pain medications and fever reducers, paired with fluid intake and plenty of rest.

Seniors are Especially at Risk

Seniors, however, have extra precautions they need to take.  They have a handicap when it comes to the Zika virus or any other illness. Seniors have weaker immune systems than they did when they were younger, and that makes it more difficult for their bodies to fight off infections. To help keep seniors safe, make sure they are receiving their vaccines each year. They can also strengthen their immune systems with a healthy diet and exercise. Meals should include plenty of vegetables, especially leafy green ones like spinach or kale, lean proteins and heart-healthy whole grains.

How to Protect Your Elderly Loved One

To limit mosquito exposure, seniors should:

  • Dress in long sleeve, light colored clothing to minimize exposure.
  • Use bug spray
  • Hang netting and screens on porches and patios
  • Destroy mosquito breeding grounds where standing water pools up by dumping it out
